Sivananda Yoga is a style of Hatha Yoga. The core of the practice is a sequence of 12 postures, which was designed with the primary intention of helping the prana – or life force – to flow more freely in the body.
A class typically begins with Savasana, followed by pranayama exercises, after which we perform classical Sun Salutations and leg raises. This is followed by the core of the practice – the twelve asanas – that we hold for prolonged periods of time for maximum benefit. The series of poses is to be practised in precise order, but once mastered, variations can be added to further deepen the practice. The class ends with a long Savasana.
Coordinates movement with breath to flow from one pose to the next. The term vinyasa also describes a sequence (Chaturanga to upward-facing dog to downward-facing dog) used in these classes.
